Career trajectory and competencies for Pricing in SaaS

Hi all, I’m leading the first pricing function at my company, and trying to think through career laddering. Has anyone seen any good resources on pricing careers or org charts, or would anyone be willing to connect on the topic to share what they’re doing well at their (preferably SaaS) company ?

Hey Jonathan, awesome question. I caught up with Sam Lee, who leads pricing at HubSpot late last year and he had a cool take on this. He breaks it down into four areas: Product Pricing, Pricing Strategy, Outbound GTM Pricing, and Pricing Ops. Not sure how he thinks about the org chart, but would imagine he would be open to a discussion to chat about it. Happy to make an intro!

that would be great if you’re and he’s open to it.

The way that I’ve thought about it is in four buckets also, though different buckets (1) Strategy (2) Governance (3) Operations (e.g., scheduling interviews) and (4) Learning and Research / Analytics. What I’ve struggled with is, when overall resourcing is tight, how to think about prioritization, and secondly, how to approach leveling within the respective competencies in a similar resource-constrained environment. Definitely would appreciate the intro though.

Think this makes a ton of sense. I’ll reach out and see if Sam’s open to it!

Update here @Jonathan_Ford - working on scheduling an AMA with Sam where he can answer this more fully. Will keep you posted on timing!

Another consideration is where you want to ascend to. There’s a distinct difference between a VP of Pricing of an end-to-end team (i.e. strategy to execution), which is what it sounds like you’re building, vs. VP of Pricing Strategy vs. VP of Pricing Operations. The size of the company plays a role and which C-level you report into.
