We have lots of ideas for evolving our pricing and several go-to-market strategies we’re eager to test. The challenge? We’re constantly hitting the wall when it comes to billing system flexibility. Our current setup (Zuora) makes even small changes feel like major projects, which limits our ability to move fast and experiment.
I’d love to hear how others are handling this. Have you found a billing system that supports flexibility and speed without turning every pricing tweak into a multi-week engineering effort? Any platforms you’d recommend — or pitfalls to avoid?
Curious if it’s more about metering or entitlements that govern feature access.
There’s a class of new companies that can help manage this. I actually wrote about it today with help from @Fynn_Glover, who’s the CEO of Schematic, one of those companies
Totally feel this. You’re running into the classic tradeoff: speed vs. flexibility.
Most billing systems that feel fast and easy tend to limit how far you can stretch on pricing models. And the ones that give you full control come with a heavier engineering requirements.
If flexibility is the priority - being able to experiment and go in any direction - you’ll likely need dev involvement. In that case, it makes sense to lean into tools your engineers already know and trust (Stripe is a common pick for exactly that reason).
Curious to hear how others are balancing this too. It’s a real pain point for teams trying to move fast on pricing.
We’re looking for greater flexibility in creating new plans or running marketing campaigns (e.g., unique coupon codes, 50% off for 6 months, etc.). While this is currently possible with Zuora, it requires significant development and design work, as everything is managed through our custom backend and frontend.
Ideally, we’d like a billing system where most configurations can be handled without the need for software or frontend development — especially considering that most SaaS businesses share common needs, typically involving a combination of subscriptions and usage-based fees.
Got it. I actually wrote about the new crop of SaaS pricing platforms that are helping make this easier. Linking the post below in case its helpful:
Given your focus on getting this done without devs, I’d recommend speaking with Fynn at Schematic. Even if it’s not a fit, I’d imagine he can point you in the right direction of other billing tools that might be able to help.
